Construction Safety - OSHA Fatal Four Events

The steering committee for the Lake County Safety Council is proud to present the March virtual/webinar program ---  Back to the Basics - Construction Safety  (special emphasis on OSHA Fatal Four events) - with keynote speaker(s) Matt Reichardt, Drew Williams, Nick Papadorotheou and Ryan Maraffi.

The program is from 9 to 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 10, 2022.  This training event is provided by the LCSC steering committee.

The presentation will continue the theme established for this year "Back to the Basics" and cover issues construction employers (and employees) need to be aware of regarding general construction safety and specifically the OSHA identified "Fatal Four."

Reichardt, from Valley Interior Systems will cover "Fall Hazards." Williams, from The Great Lakes Construction Co., will cover "Struck-by Hazards." Papadorotheou, from The Ritenour Group will address "Caught In or Between Hazards." And, Ryan Maraffi, from Hatzel & Buehler/Bluestone Communications, will cover "Electrocution Hazards.'

While every job comes with a certain amount of risk, OSHA estimates more than 20% of workplace fatalities occur in construction jobs. In these jobs, the leading cause of fatalities can be broken down between four main categories (otherwise known as the 'Fatal Four'): falls, struck by an object, electrocutions, and caught-in/between.

Out of 4,779 worker fatalities in private industry in 2018, 1,008 or 21.1% were in construction. Since these are so prominent, OSHA has taken extra precautions to ensure workers' safety when working on any type of construction site.

Adapt and Elevate:  Improving Performance Through Metacognition

On Wednesday, March 9 join us as we meet Michael Bonner, visionary leader and fourth/sixth grade English teacher at the famed Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta, Georgia, as he outlines principles of environment & culture, purposeful collaboration, and how self-development can create a higher level of performance. The entire world was forced to stop due to Covid-19 as it wreaked havoc across multiple industries. It dismantled many businesses and forced most organizations into emergency online systems. In spite of all of the damage that has taken place, we have been presented with a prime opportunity to reimagine how we operate from a new perspective.

Management Mess to Leadership Success

On Thursday, March 10, hear Scott Miller, Special Advisor on Thought Leadership for Franklin Covey and author of Management Mess to Leadership Success highlight seven of his 30 challenges to become the leader YOU would follow.

Based on personal life lessons, including failure in his first leadership position and several messy management experiences since in his two-decade journey to leadership success, Scott will openly and transparently share his story. BWC Library Question of the Month

A question received by the library over the past month with our response.

Question:

What are the egress requirements concerning emergency exit doors?

Answer:

Emergency exit doors must conform to requirements found in the Ohio Fire Code, OSHA, and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

Here are some takeaways from each. Please note: There may be exceptions for the requirements listed under each set of rules/standards, and you should consult the entire standard (we have hyperlinked to each below). Occupancy and other special circumstances may dictate whether specifics of the code apply to your situation. If you need help determining what your situation calls for, please reach out to our BWC Safety Consultants. Consultation services are free for those with a BWC policy, and you can find out more on our website.

OSHA 1910.36 - Exit Routes and Emergency Planning: “1910.37(b)(3) Each exit route door must be free of decorations or signs that obscure the visibility of the exit route door.”

Ohio Fire Code 1307:7-7-10: “(b) [BE] 1010.1.2 Door swing. Egress doors shall be of the pivoted or side-hinged swinging type.”

NFPA 101 – Life Safety Code: “7.2.1.5.1 Door leaves shall be arranged to be opened readily from the egress side whenever the building is occupied.”

If you have questions about one of the standards above, a question about fire codes/egress requirements, or any questions related to occupational safety and health, Ask a librarian or send an email to library@bwc.state.oh.us.
