Mental Health & Addiction - The Impact on Workplace Safety
The steering committee for the Lake County Safety Council is proud to present the February virtual/webinar program --- Back to the Basics - Understanding How Mental Health Issues & Addiction Impact Safety in the Workplace - with keynote speaker Sandra Tenkku, Community Outreach Specialist, Lake County ADAMHS Board. The program is from 9 to 10 a.m. on Thursday, February 10, 2022. This training event is provided to you by the LCSC steering committee. The presentation will continue with the theme established for this year "Back to the Basics" and cover issues employers (and employees) need to be aware of regarding the impact of mental health issues and addiction on safety in their workplace. The program is aimed at presenting a brief overview; review; and definition of "behavioral health" and mental illness and/or substance use disorders. This will then be framed in the context of "workplace safety" and how it is increasingly relevent and impactful on companies. Tenkku has been working in the field of behavioral and social services for 15 years. As the community outreach specialist for the ADAMHS board Tenkku coordinates and leads the Lake County Suicide Prevention Coalition. She also coordinates the Trauma Response Team and the Community Alliance of Law Enforcement and Mental Health Services Committee. The program will delineate how behavioral health influences the company's bottom line, the firm's absenteeism rate, workforce safety and workforce morale. One in five employees will experience mental illness and one in seven will experience substance use disorders. And yet, a very small percentage of these employees get the required treatment; much of this do to the lingering stigma associated with these behavioral health issues. Most employees dealing with these issues do not feel they have an easy, safe and confidential way at the workplace to access a comfortable conversaton about behavioral health. However, it is becoming increasingly more vital for companies to address these issues. Tenkku is a certified trainer in Mental Health First Aid, QPR, Signs of Suicide; and is trained in a number of other evidence-based programs. The program will address specific illnesses (with symptoms) and give examples of how behavioral health issues impact job performance and workplace safety.
