BWC Update - What

The steering committee for the Lake County Safety Council is proud to present the May virtual/webinar program  ---  What's Next (after the pandemic) for Safety Councils AND BWC Update - Initiatives and Resources  -  with keynote speaker John Wilton, business consultant, Northeastern Ohio, BWC.

The program is from 9 to 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 13, 2021.  This training event is provided to you by the LCSC steering committee.

The meeting will include an update on the 2021-2022 (FY2022) safety council program as well as BWC and legislative updates.

Wilton has more than 20 years of experience in the Ohio workers' compensation system, including an extensive history spent working with a third-party administrator. His extensive background provides him with an understanding of the employer issues and challenges faced by BWC customers.

Wilton's duties as a business consultant include working with employers in northeastern Ohio to implement proven risk management strategies through various cost control programs.

The meeting also will review the grants available through the BWC (which have been reinstated) and safety council program incentive deadlines and updates.

Wilton earned his bachelor of arts degree from Kent State University with a focus on history and a minor in paralegal studies. After graduation he began his careers as a private investigator with a focus on potentially fraudlent workers' compensation claims.

Ohio Offers Workplace Vaccination Clinics

Ohio has begun working with employers and other organizations to offer workplace vaccination clinics. Vaccine providers can allot up to 25 percent of their vaccine allocation to be used to vaccinate their own employees or to partner with local employers, labor unions, churches, and other organizations to vaccinate their employees at their work locations. Employers and organizations are encouraged to reach out to their local health department and vaccine providers to set up vaccination clinics.

The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) has updated its vaccination guidance for employers and organizations. To read it, click here (PDF). ODH also has guidance for vaccine providers working with Ohio employers and organizations. To read it, click here (PDF).

All Ohioans 16 years old and older are eligible for vaccinations at clinics and sites across the state. Appointments can be scheduled by visiting gettheshot.coronavirus.ohio.gov or by calling 1-833-427-5634 (1-833-4-ASK-ODH).

NIOSH/CDC News

New Survey Instrument Available from NIOSH to Help Assess Worker Well-Being

NIOSH published a new survey instrument called the NIOSH Worker Well-Being Questionnaire (NIOSH WellBQ). This new tool is intended to help researchers, employers, workers, practitioners, and policymakers understand workers’ well-being as a holistic construct and target interventions to improve worker well-being. The survey takes about 15-minutes for a worker to complete and covers five areas of worker well-being:

  1. Work Evaluation and Experience.
  2. Workplace Policies and Culture.
  3. Workplace Physical Environment and Safety Climate.
  4. Health Status.
  5. Home, Community, and Society.

New Factsheet on Upper-room Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation

CDC published this new webpage about upper-room ultraviolent germicidal irradiation (UVGI), which can be effective at reducing exposures to SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, in some group settings. UVGI uses ultraviolet (UV) energy to kill viral, bacterial, and fungal organisms. CDC recommends a layered strategy for reducing exposures to infectious viral particles including other ventilation interventions. BWC’s COVID-19 Indoor Air Quality Assistance Program may help cover the costs of inspections, assessments, maintenance, and improvements to indoor heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to control the spread of COVID-19.

Opioid Overdose Deaths Video

This new video from NIOSH describes the data on overdoses in the workplace and is based on the NIOSH fact sheet on the use of Naloxone in the workplace. The video helps employers decide if making Naloxone available at their workplace is right for them.

Vaccine Site Safety

The CDC created two new fact sheets, one on conserving sharps disposal containers to address supply shortages and one on reducing needlestick injuries for vaccinators and others assisting at COVID-19 vaccination sites.

COVID-19 Vaccine Resources for Construction

The Center for Construction Research and Training developed frequently asked questions and four infographics to help the construction industry understand the science and benefits of the COVID-19 vaccine in collaboration with The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler and NIOSH.
