Preventing Machine Related Injuries
The steering committee for the Lake County Safety Council is proud to present the February virtual/webinar program --- Three Steps to Prevent Machine Related Injuries - with keynote speaker Ken Hackworth, PE, FS Eng, Safety Services Manager, Machine Safety Specialists. The program is from 9 to 10 a.m. on Thursday, February 11, 2021. This training event is provided to you by the LCSC steering committee. The webinar describes three critical steps to improving fixed industrial machine safety: Motivation, Discovery and Control. Motivators include -- our social responsibility to prevent human injury, our corporate responsibility to comply with laws and regulations and our goals to prevent disruptive fines and costs. Once motivated to take action, employees and employers must discover hazards that require mitigation. Strategies for hazard discovery include professional machine safeguarding audits, risk assessments and plant walkthroughs. After hazards are discovered, they must be controlled by applying the Hierarchy of Hazard Controls. This methodology, originally developed by NIOSH, prescribes the priority, sequence and effectiveness of risk reduction methods. As part of engineering controls, mechanical guarding, control reliability and functional safety are explored. Lastly, administrative risk reduction measures are considered. Hackworth has more than 25 years of experience in industrial controls and functional safety systems and is a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) and a certified Functional Safety Engineer. He received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Ohio State University, is a subcommittee member of ANSI B11 safety standards and a member of the American Society of Safety Professionals. After completing this webinar, attendees will become familiar with the three-step process to identify and reduce the risks associated with fixed industrial machinery Course Objectives: - Understand a “3-Step” process to identify and reduce the risks associated with fixed industrial machinery.
- Understand common motivators for improving machine safety.
- Develop a framework for hazard recognition and the Hierarchy of Controls.
- Understand the relative effectiveness of risk reduction methods such as: Elimination, machine guarding, control reliability, functional safety systems, and administrative controls.
Hackworth is experienced and certified in U.S. and international safety standards, including OSHA, ANSI, NFPA, RIA, and ISO/EN standards and specializes in machine safety engineering and compliance consulting. As a trainer for OSHA, Ohio BWC and several multi-national industrial clients, he enjoys training safety professionals, technical staff and business leaders in the latest technology and safety standards for industrial machinery.
