Preventing Machine Related Injuries

The steering committee for the Lake County Safety Council is proud to present the February virtual/webinar program  ---  Three Steps to Prevent Machine Related Injuries  -  with keynote speaker Ken Hackworth, PE, FS Eng, Safety Services Manager, Machine Safety Specialists.

The program is from 9 to 10 a.m. on Thursday, February 11, 2021.  This training event is provided to you by the LCSC steering committee.

The webinar describes three critical steps to improving fixed industrial machine safety:  Motivation, Discovery and Control.  Motivators include -- our social responsibility to prevent human injury, our corporate responsibility to comply with laws and regulations and our goals to prevent disruptive fines and costs.

Once motivated to take action, employees and employers must discover hazards that require mitigation.  Strategies for hazard discovery include professional machine safeguarding audits, risk assessments and plant walkthroughs.  After hazards are discovered, they must be controlled by applying the Hierarchy of Hazard Controls.  This methodology, originally developed by NIOSH, prescribes the priority, sequence and effectiveness of risk reduction methods.  As part of engineering controls, mechanical guarding, control reliability and functional safety are explored.  Lastly, administrative risk reduction measures are considered.

Hackworth has more than 25 years of experience in industrial controls and functional safety systems and is a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) and a certified Functional Safety Engineer.  He received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Ohio State University, is a subcommittee member of ANSI B11 safety standards and a member of the American Society of Safety Professionals.

After completing this webinar, attendees will become familiar with the three-step process to identify and reduce the risks associated with fixed industrial machinery

Course Objectives:

  • Understand a “3-Step” process to identify and reduce the risks associated with fixed industrial machinery.
  • Understand common motivators for improving machine safety.
  • Develop a framework for hazard recognition and the Hierarchy of Controls.
  • Understand the relative effectiveness of risk reduction methods such as:  Elimination, machine guarding, control reliability, functional safety systems, and administrative controls.

Hackworth is experienced and certified in U.S. and international safety standards, including OSHA, ANSI, NFPA, RIA, and ISO/EN standards and specializes in machine safety engineering and compliance consulting.  As a trainer for OSHA, Ohio BWC and several multi-national industrial clients, he enjoys training safety professionals, technical staff and business leaders in the latest technology and safety standards for industrial machinery.

January BWC - Updates and Information

Check your mail, cash those dividend checks

The BWC urges Ohio employers to cash the dividend checks we mailed in December to mitigate the economic hardship brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. As of Jan. 12, more than 23,000 employers still had not cashed $513.7 million in checks we sent last month in our $5 billion dividend for nearly 180,000 private and public employers. Read more on our website.

Deadline extended for HVAC assistance program

The BWC has extended the deadline to apply for reimbursement for eligible expenses under our COVID-19 Indoor Air Quality Assistance Program to March 31, 2021. This federally funded program provides reimbursement for nursing homes, assisted living centers, and adult day centers that invest in air quality improvements that reduce the spread of COVID-19. This may include the costs of inspections, assessments, maintenance, and improvements to indoor heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. It also provides reimbursement for secondary devices designed to destroy bacteria, mold, and viruses. Read more, including eligibility requirements, on our website.

10% rate cut for public employers

Ohio's public employers will pay an average of 10% less in premiums this year thanks to a rate reduction that went into effect Jan. 1. The total savings for employers is about $14.8 million over last year’s premiums. The reduction, made possible by declining injury trends and relatively low medical inflation costs, follows a 10% cut in 2020 and a 12% reduction in 2019. Read more on our website. A history of BWC rate changes since 2000 for private and public employers can be  found online by clicking this link.

Send us your W-9s

The BWC issued nearly $8 billion in dividends in 2020, some or all of which might be taxable to you. (Please consult your tax adviser.) The deadline to send your W-9 to us was Dec. 31, 2020. If you missed the deadline, please send us your W-9 immediately. You can upload the form on our website using our Upload W-9 service offering, or you can mail us a W-9 (find the form on the IRS website) to Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation, 30 W. Spring St., Columbus, OH 43215. If you have any questions, please call our customer contact center at 1-800-644-6292. Read more on our website.
