of supplied air respirators and provides basic information regarding their use and protection factors. Grain Bin Safety

entrapment occurred in Ohio this year, but they didn’t have to. Find out how to keep yourself safe around

Celebration of 100 Years of Respiratory Protection
The September 2019 issue of NIOSH eNews celebrated 100 years of NIOSH respiratory protection. The article contains links to information on respirator approvals, performance requirements, fit testing, links to recorded webinars, and goals for the program going forward. Disaster Cleanup Safety
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and NIOSH presented the webinar Disasters – Keeping Volunteers, Workers, and Responders Safe. The recording of this webinar for volunteers, workers, and responders who clean up, rebuild, or support other response and recovery efforts after a disaster is available to view online. OSHA News
Updated Heat Illness Page
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) updated its heat illness webpage. The page contains information on working in hot environments, including definitions, plan creation, risk factors, links to the OSHA standards, and case studies. OSHA Alerts
The most recent in a series of OSHA Alerts presents information to keep workers safe while working around overhead powerlines. Previous alerts cover trench safety, flood cleanup, forklifts, and hot weather. Top 10 Violations for 2019
Fall protection, with over 6,000 citations, continues to top the list of most common violations for 2019. OSHA announced the list for fiscal year 2019 at the National Safety Council Congress and Expo. The only change from 2018 was a move up the list by Lockout/Tagout from fifth to fourth place. This list provides a good incentive to look closely at these programs at your workplace.

A review of research on job tenure and risk of workplace injuries by the Canadian Institute for Work and Health found there is a greater risk of acute injuries to workers during their first year at a new job. Safety Webinars

The CDC TRAIN is a free online service offering links to over 1,000 classes created by CDC programs, grantees, and other funded partners. The CDC TRAIN is an affiliate of the Public Health Foundation’s TRAIN Learning Network. Class topics include opioids, access to care, chronic diseases, emergency medical services, public safety, workforce development, and much more. Many classes offer continuing education credits. The National Safety Council has a free toolkit to assist employers with opioid issues in their workplaces. The kit has materials to help you understand the impact of opioids, opioid misuse, signs of impairment, drug policies, and supporting struggling employees. Free Dust Hazard Analysis Webinar
The American Association of Safety Professionals’ Fire Protection Practice Specialty is sponsoring a free webinar on dust hazard analysis at 2 p.m. Oct. 3. Learn about this process and the requirements under National Fire Protection Administration Standard 652. CSB Safety Digest
The Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB) issued a Safety Digest on worker participation in process safety. The board states this participation is essential in the prevention of chemical incidents. The digest contains information on four CSB investigations that illustrate how a lack of worker participation contributed to each major incident. It concludes with guidance to improve participation and a link to the CSB policy on worker participation. Over the Counter Prescription Safety
The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration created a series of videos illustrating the dangers of operating heavy machinery (including your car) while taking medication. Farm Animal Safety
The U.S. Agricultural Safety and Health Centers has a YouTube Channel with many videos on farm safety. The most recent video describes safely moving sows on the farm. Firefighter Cancer Prevention
The National Volunteer Fire Council and International Association of Fire Chiefs’ Volunteer and Combination Officers Section released a report called the Lavender Ribbon Report with 11 actions firefighters can take to lessen the risk of occupational cancer. You can read the report and download 11 posters, one for each action, on their website.
