Lake County Safety Council – Safety Expo 2025

The goal of the Lake County Safety Council’s Safety Expo is to help attendees find out how effective workplace safety and health programs can increase the overall productivity of their business or organization.

Attendees may choose from 12 classes and informational sessions to help learn ways to improve the safety, well-being and quality of life for their workplace. They also can speak with more than two dozen vendors and sponsors who will be attending the event about safety related equipment and services – all for one admission fee. The admission fee includes all seminars and classes, breakfast and lunch.

Classes will begin immediately following registration and breakfast (7:15 to 8 a.m.).

Attendance at the expo qualifies for safety council rebate program external training credit and group rating two-hour training credit…both with the submission of a certificate of attendance to a sponsoring organization. LCSC members receive one regular safety council rebate meeting credit.

Also, please note - A.L.I.C.E. (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) training is being offered.

Classes have a limited number of seats, so early registration is encouraged. The deadline for registration to guarantee your spot is Monday, May 12.

Cost

Topic: About Scott: Scott Cole lives with his family in Mentor, Ohio and works as a Business Unit EHS Director for Turner Construction Company. Scott is a Board Certified Safety Professional, Construction Health and Safety Specialist as well as a Safety Management Professional. Scott’s community support can be seen by his ling-standing engagement with the American Society of Safety Professionals and Lake County Safety Council. Scott also provides safety consulting services to local organizations through Cole Safety Services, LLC.
A.L.I.C.E. Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate

Speaker: Chris Moffitt and Robert Thompson, Training Specifics A.L.I.C.E. Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate. Multi-session class will break between sessions and for lunch. Target Audience: Facility managers, school administrators, supervisors, HR, security-safety teams, employees, anyone in the public-private sector, CEO Course Description: The ALICE program is designed to give mental and physical tools that may play a vital role in survival for those who find themselves in violent or life threatening situations. Time passes quickly in this multi-session course. Some attendees participate in an actual lock down session; others observe the demonstration.
Basics of Fall Protection

Following his service as Flight Medic with the US Army, he became a Firefighter and Paramedic, Hazmat Team, and Emergency Planning Committee and many more safety related roles.
Confined Space
9:30 AM to 10:30 AM
Speaker: Mike O'Donnel, General Manager, SCT Operations. esponsibilities when working in confined spaces. This course focuses on hazard recognition and methods of controls that are implemented to engage this work safely. We educate employers and employees on their roles and responsibilities, safe work practices, engineering controls, proper planning and work practice controls. We answer the questions: What is a confined space? What is a permit required confined space and what is the difference? What is the role and responsibility of the (1) Entrant, (2) the Attendant, (3) the Supervisor. What are hazardous atmospheres? What other hazards might a confined spaces contain? How do we address, mitigate and eliminate those hazards? What details are contained in the confined space permit? What about rescue plans?
How to Win Friends and Influence People In Safety

Speaker: Cari Gray, Safety Consultant, Ohio BWC This class will address The safety role is a sales role. You’re continually selling safety to all levels in your organization. In this presentation, we’ll identify who you must influence, and methods to get your safety message across. Set yourself up for success as we explore tried-and-true methods to win friends and influence people (in safety). About Cari: Cari has been a Safety Consultant with the BWC since May 2005. She works with a diverse range of companies in many different industries, from public entities to a wide variety of private companies. She helps customers evaluate their current safety situations, set goals and create plans of action to successfully achieve their goals. She also teaches many safety related classes for the BWC. Prior to working at the BWC, Cari was an Environmental, Safety and Health Manager for General Electric. She also worked in the Safety Department of an automotive based company, after graduating from The Ohio State University in 1999. Cari is very passionate about the safety and health of Ohio employees. Her philosophy is based around top management commitment, employee involvement and personal responsibility. Her time outside of work is happily spent with her husband, two children, two dogs and flock of chickens.
Whole Person Health: New Mental Health Resources

Speaker: Robin Kish, Senior Account Director, Active Health Physical Health, Mental Health, and Whole Person Health: We will cover new mental health resources and fresh content you can take back to your workplace for your workforce. Better You, Better Ohio!® is administered by ActiveHealth for the Ohio BWC for small employers in high-risk industries. During this session I will provide you: • An overview of the new and fresh content for Better You, Better Ohio!: Physical Health, Mental Health and Whole Person Health resources • A Better You, Better Ohio!: Physical Health, Mental Health and Whole Person Health toolkit After this session you will be able to: • Refer to Better You, Better Ohio! and the new Mental Health resources • Summarize approaches and calendars to sharing the whole-person health resources About Robin:At a young age Robin lost a family member to undiagnosed heart disease, this created the passion that drives Robin's energy to share helpful health information that can make a meaningful impacts. As an Account Director at ActiveHealth Robin gets to implement, guide and deliver services to help clients achieve their health goals. Prior to ActiveHealth Robin worked with Fortune 5 companies in over 40 states. In her current role, she is energized to focus on clients in her home state of Ohio.
Emergency Response Plans

Speaker: Michelle Sowers, Regional Emergency Management Specialist. This session offers a look at emergency planning and involves focusing on essential strategies and practical tips to create an emergency response plan in 10 steps. Attendees will be focusing on actionable information for best practices to create a plan. About Michelle: Michelle Sowers is a Regional Liaison for the Ohio Emergency Management Agency (Ohio EMA). She provides assistance to 18 counties throughout Northeast Ohio to coordinate emergency planning and exercise development with local and state response agencies. Her role with Ohio EMA also allows her to provide support for a variety of state and county emergency management operations such as Emergency Operations Centers (EOC), public outreach and training, and on-scene incident response. Prior to her employment with Ohio EMA, Michelle earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology from Penn State University and a Master’s of Public Administration degree with a Graduate Certificate in Emergency Management from Florida State University. She was previously employed as the Deputy State Meteorologist with the Florida Division of Emergency Management and as an Emergency Preparedness Planner at the Florida Department of Health.
OSHA Record Keeping and Q & A Scenarios

Understanding Emotional Intelligence (EI) In The Work Place

Speaker: Prof. Tony Silva, Professor, PhDc, Safex EI plays a significant role in creating a safe workplace and environment. By understanding and managing your own emotions and those of others, preventing accidents, reducing conflicts, and promoting teamwork. EI contributes to psychological safety by creating a neutral and supportive environment for everyone. EI is also a valuable skill for management and leaders to better understand employees, recognize stressors, and help to create a mindful and safer environment About Tony: Prof. Tony Silva is the Drug Free Workplace & Wellbeing Coordinator and Trainer, focusing on supporting clients with their Drug Free Workplace and Wellbeing training needs. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology from Capella University in 2017, a Master's Degree in Forensic Psychology from Walden University in 2019, and completed his Ph.D. in Forensic Psychology coursework (Forensic Psychologist) from Walden University in 2022 (PhDc). He is currently working on his dissertation intending to complete it in 2025-2026 Prior to joining Safex, Prof. Tony served in the United States Air Force and was born and raised on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. So, diversity, inclusion, and equality are what he grew up with. He is easygoing and admittedly has a quirky sense of humor. His life experiences have broadened his perspectives on seeing life very differently. While his nurturing-island-upbringing and military experiences have built him to be a great listener, problem solver, and educator. As a dedicated Professor at several Universities, both online and in person, Prof. Tony’s expertise in Psychopathology, Health Psychology, Emotional Intelligence, and several other Psychology topics, underpins his teaching philosophy and as a great course developer. About Scott:Dr. Michael “Scott” Bailey is the owner and President of Work Injury Solutions servicing Northeast Ohio. He earned a Bachelor degree in Exercise Physiology in 1997, a Master’s degree in Physical Therapy from Ohio University in 2000 and a Doctorate degree in Physical Therapy from Chatham University in 2010. He completed fellowship training in orthopedics and manual therapy at Daemen University, Buffalo, NY in 2015 and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists. He specializes in orthopedics and manual physical therapy and provides these services to injured workers at numerous work-sites in NE Ohio. He is also a certified Ohio BWC Transitional Work Developer and assists employers in developing comprehensive work-injury management and injury prevention programs. Dr. Bailey served eight years as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army Reserve Medical Specialist Corps and, prior to becoming a physical therapist, served six years in the U.S. Navy in the Nuclear Power Program. About Mara:Ms. Mara McClain is an Account Executive for Sedgwick TPA in Dublin, Ohio. She has more than 22 years of risk management, claims, safety and client management experience. Ms. McClain joined Sedgwick in 2002, and in her current role, has worked across Sedgwick’s public and private customer base ensuring that best-in-class results are achieved by Sedgwick’s service delivery models. This work includes implementing change based on innovative claim services and specific work on customer program designs and results. Ms. McClain has been recognized by numerous clients throughout Ohio for providing outstanding program management and customer service. Mara’s main focus has been educating Ohio employers on the various rating programs, assisting in claims and safety management, and helping employers save money on workers’ compensation premiums. Ms. McClain began her career in 1994 at the National Federation of Independent Business holding various positions including Territory Manager and Manager Trainee. Life In The Salt Mine

This session will focus on the importance of a safe work environment, while also addressing the practical hurdles that come with mining in such a demanding and hazardous industry. About the Speakers:Ty Heinemann – Mine Superintendent With over 10 years of experience in salt mines, Ty has been involved with many facets of mining. Started as a seasonal worker and over the years, has transitioned into leadership and safety-focused roles, where he has been instrumental in developing and improving safety protocols, training programs, and operational efficiency strategies. Rob Hulett – Engineer Technician With 17 years of hands-on experience in the mining industry, Rob has worked across a range of roles, demonstrating a deep commitment to both operational excellence and safety. His passion for safety is evident in his achievements as an overall safety representative, where he played a pivotal role in ensuring a culture of safety in the workplace. Notably, Rob led the team to an outstanding milestone—achieving over two years without a single injury. His extensive experience and dedication make him an invaluable resource in promoting safety and efficiency at the Fairport Mine. Nick Kreilick – Health & Safety Manager Nick brings a wealth of experience from his extensive career in both production and maintenance within the mining industry. Since 2007, Nick has been deeply involved in mine rescue and mine safety, consistently demonstrating his expertise and commitment to improving safety standards. His dedication to fostering safer work environments and promoting best practices in mine safety has earned him recognition as a trusted leader in the industry.
Problem Gambling

Speaker: Claire Spada, Lake Geauga Recovery Centers This workshop explores gambling availability and legality in Ohio and the impact of problem gambling, on the individual, families, communities, and the workplace. Participants will review Ohio-specific gambling data, learn about criteria for problem gambling and gambling disorder, and discuss resources, workplace policies, and local options for support for employers and individuals. About Claire: Claire is an Ohio Certified Prevention Consultant and serves as a contractor for Lake-Geauga Recovery Centers. She has worked in the prevention field for over 15 years which has included a focus on substance use and problem gambling prevention across the lifespan. In current and previous roles, Claire has coordinated local problem gambling services and was effective in developing screening procedures, providing awareness and education to counselors and clients, integrating problem gambling into drug and alcohol prevention, as well as ensuring that her agency was well prepared to address gambling disorder.
